Being your own boss

Sometimes my friends get confused about what it is I do for a living. My schedule is super flexible, I work when I want, I don't have a boss, and I choose who I work with.

What I do is, I help people improve their health through nutrition, and I also coach entrepreneurs looking to own a business in the wellness industry.

This has become a very rewarding career for me. As with any business, it takes some time to get your business started, but it is well worth it. The best part is, unlike traditional businesses, or franchising, there are no huge startup fees, no quotas, no overhead, no inventory, and no territorial restrictions. You build you business as big as you want, and at your own pace. You are in business for yourself, but with the support of a 40 year old, multinational company, and the biggest body of research among all nutritional, and pharmaceutical products out there.

So this shall serve as an invitation to people who like a challenge, aren't afraid of working and want to help make people be healthier and feel better.

No experience necessary, all you need is a passion for making a difference and an entrepreneurial spirit; a willingness to learn and work with others.

There are different ways to approach the business; it is totally up to you;
- Some people work it full time, dedicating 30 to 40 hours a week to it.
- Some people start it part time, as a plan B, and grow it until it replaces their full time income and they can quit their full time jobs.
- Others build it slowly, and are mainly interested in getting their own product at wholesale price or making an extra couple hundred dollars a month.
- Doctors’ offices and health professionals, use it as a second source of income for their practices, and as a way to offer value to their patients by sharing with them the benefits of good nutrition.
- Personal trainers, sports coaches and teams use it as a way to raise funds while responding to their athletes’ nutritional needs.
- Schools and community organizations use it as a health conscious fundraiser that benefits both themselves and their communities.

Whatever your approach, the process is the same. I have devoted myself to helping others build their businesses, and would love to partner up with you and help you grow yours.

I would love to speak with you and evaluate the possibility of teaming up and working together. Please contact me at 954-274-4058 or tatiana0211@gmail.com

Lack of Communication

As much as we humans want to believe he have evolved so far ahead of our fellow mammals, the truth is our bodies still speak a pretty primitive language. A language similar to the one spoken by the bodies of all other mammals out there, those that are alive today, and those that lived in the past. Now the big problem is, with our modern style of life, we have started to speak a different language from the one our bodies can understand. We speak in terms of fast food and TV dinners, while our body speaks in terms of enzymes and live nutrients. We think of stress as having a type A personality, our body understands stress as a fight of flight situation. We speak in terms of sedentary lifestyle, our body understands time of famine.

So just as it happens in any other relationship, when there is a lack of communication, when there is no understanding of one another, things start to fall apart, and trouble starts to develop. That makes for a good explanation of why today, when medical science is at it’s peak, when medical advances climb to levels unimagined in the past, we are having more cancer, more heart disease, more diabetes and obesity problems than ever before. More deaths caused by preventable disease, than ever in human history. Our bodies and us are speaking two different languages.

When we feed our body fragmented nutrients, enriched flours, refined sugars, processed foods, it doesn’t know what to do with them. It cannot read them, hence, it cannot absorb any real nutrition from them. To function properly, our bodies need live enzymes, that are found in the kind of food that comes from nature. When food is exposed to extreme temperatures, and to complex industrial processes, those enzymes die. Our body also needs whole nutrients (non-fragmented) , vitamins and minerals in their natural form. Phytonutrients that it can understand, absorb and benefit from. Again, this are only found in mother nature’s factory, not in processed foods. 70% of our daily diet should be made up of, raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grain, in order to feed our body what it needs. So in today’s society, our food choices are one of the main ways in which we are turning our relationship with our body into a dysfunctional, conflict relationship. And the thing here is, that when our body doesn't get the enzymes it needs to function, from the food we feed it, it starts stealing them from itself. It takes enzymes form certain organs, to make others work, unbalancing it's system, and opening the door for decay and disease.

But it doesn’t stop there, on top of not feeding it right, we are sending it misleading signals all the time. Our primitive thinking body, understands stress as a couple of second, maybe minutes, of a life treating situation. Run or be eaten, kill or starve. At these times, the body understands that things have changed for the worse, and it needs to respond to it. In order to survive these situations, the body takes some extreme measures, it diverts blood from less vital to more vital organs, it increases the heart rate and the blood pressure, it increases the respiratory rate to get more oxygen, it breaks down glycogen stores in liver and muscle to get more glucose, it forms more glucose from non carbohydrate substances. Used correctly, stress is a great tool of survival, wild animals use it all the time. But when instead of it being a couple of minutes, we turn it into a lifestyle, into a constant through several hours every day, what are we doing with our body? Our conflict relationship is now turning into an abuse relationship.

Similarly, when we live sedentary or depressed lives, we are sending our bodies the wrong message. Animals in nature hibernate, and go sedentary, in low provision seasons, at times when they will face extended periods without food, times of famine. To respond to that, our body’s survival reaction is to stock up for the season. So, regardless of how much food you eat, it stocks as much as possible for later, and it saves it in the form of fat. It dumps the immune system, to save some energy, It melts off the muscle, and lets the joints decay. Your whole body as a system starts to decay.

So if I may offer some free counseling to help save your relationship, it will be for you to learn to communicate with your body. Learn it’s language, and speak it fluently every day. Feed it what it understands, and talk to it in the right terms. Positive feelings and optimistic attitudes, together with frequent exercise and plenty of live food, are the best signals we can send to our body to tell it that everything is well, that it doesn’t need to shut down it’s metabolic processes, or save food for later, because there is abundance and safety outside. It is the best way to tell it we want to be friends, and we want this relationship to continue, and to be a good one, for many many years to come.

Smart Food Shoppers

Mother nature doesn’t lie, but us humans have an awful tendency to do so from time to time. Specially when it comes to selling our products. Food companies hide the truth behind advertising and images, and the really sad and scary part of this is they are lying about our food, about what we eat and give to our kids. So it is very important to become literate in the language of food labels. Let’s not buy the lies.

Mother nature’s “label” is the easiest to read. What are the ingredients of a tomato? Tomato! And the ingredients of a banana? Banana! Yo see where I’m going? As a general rule, if it has one ingredient, eat it, if it has more than one ingredient, read it.

Are you ready to dive into that scary box of big words and numbers? Let’s get started. Nutrition facts labels are divided by sections, so I will take it one step at a time.

The information in the top section contains the serving size and amount of servings per container. Here’s the first catch for label illiterates, the serving size. Because we have the tendency of assuming that the information refers to the entire package, but not, it only refers to a serving, so it is important to see how many servings you are really taking. Most sports drinks, for example, have 4 servings, so if you are planning to drink the whole thing, you need to multiply everything by 4.

The second part refers to calories. Calories represent the amount of energy you will get from one serving of that product. So what happens if you consume more calories than your body burns? You gain fat. As part of our animal body instincts, fat is our way of saving energy for famine, or days of low food supply. As a guide line, think of 40 Calories as low, 100 Calories as moderate, and 400 Calories or more as high. FDA recommends that a maximum of 30% (nutritionists say 25%) of our calorie intake comes from fat, so look at the “Calories from fat” too.

On to the next section, the nutrient information. There are two kinds of nutrients listed here, those we want to limit, and those we want to get enough of. If the percentage is 5% or less, it is considered to be low. It is considered a good source of a nutrient if the percentage is between 10% and 19%. Anything higher is considered high in that nutrient.

Fat, Cholesterol, and Sodium (or salt), we want to limit. In the fat section, specially, it is important to read, and be smart. We want to keep the saturated fat as low as possible, and the trans fat at 0, no tolerance here. But it is not enough to see “0 Trans fat” advertised on the box, this only means it has less than 0.5 g. per serving. So this is a second big catch, look at the ingredient list, if you see hydrogenated oil, or partially hydrogenated oil, it does contain trans fat, and you shouldn’t eat it.

Total carbohydrates, this number, listed in grams, combines several types of carbs, dietary fibers, sugars, and other carbohydrates. Carbs are the biggest source of calories. But it is important to see what kind of carbs they are, because some of them are healthy, like those from fiber, and some are not, like those from simple sugars. So, the higher the dietary fiber value, the better, the lower the sugar, the better. You see, we’re half way there, and it hasn’t been so hard.

Let’s keep going, Proteins, most parts of our body are made up of protein, so we need enough of it to stay healthy. The amount of protein we should consume depends on many factors like, weight, age, physical activity, health condition, and environmental factors, among others. Growing children and pregnant and lactating women require more protein because they are growing, or helping their babies grow. As a general guide, it is recommended to consume 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for adults every day.

Vitamins A and C are very important for us, which is why they're required to be listed on the label. Vitamin A is great for your eyesight and helps maintain healthy skin. Vitamin C builds and maintains connective tissues, heal wounds, and fight infections. The other vitamins listed are also good for us in balanced amounts.

Calcium and iron we also want enough of these minerals to stay healthy.

Ok, now that the basics are covered, let’s go into the big leagues of label reading, the ingredient list. Remember how I mentioned in the beginning, that if it has one ingredient you can go ahead and eat it knowing that it will be good for you? Well keep that in mind, for everything that does have a list of ingredients, the shorter the list, the better. Stay away form those extra long lists with many words you can’t even pronounce.
The first ingredient listed is the dominant one, so always be aware of it. If it is sugar, for example, then that is not the right breakfast for you kids!!! You are feeding them candy as the most important meal of the day. (Yes, I’m talking about some kids’ cereals).

Going on with the ingredient list, since this is not intended to be a master’s level course of nutrition, but a practical guide for our daily food shopping, I will wrap it up by listing a couple of ingredients we should always avoid, think of them as bad words, very bad words.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), this one is hard to completely avoid, because it is present in a lot of the food we eat, but we should try to keep it as low as possible. Our body has a very hard time digesting it and it can cause inflammation in vital organs and accelerated aging, not to mention weight gain.

Enriched and bleached flour, we should try and avoid these too, they provide empty calories that are not good for our body. Look for products made of 100 % wheat flour. Read the label though, because many types of bread that advertise "whole grain" or "wheat" on the package aren't necessarily made from 100% wheat four.

Hydrogenated oil and partially hydrogenated oil, we talked about these, bad, bad stuff. In fact, in some countries, these types of oils are illegal. They can cause inflammation, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease.

Refined sugar, these simple sugars, are man made, and hence non familiar to our bodies. We should only consume complex sugars, that are the ones that come from nature.

Artificial coloring, MSG (monosodium glutamate), phosphoric acid, and sodium nitrate area couple more ingredients that have been related to chronic diseases, look for them and avoid them.

And last, but certainly not least, artificial sweeteners, you know which one I'm talking about. I could write a whole new article about it (maybe I will). These should be avoided at any cost. Please, if you are to remember one thing from this article, let it be this, artificial sweeteners may harm you and you should not take them or feed them to your kids, ever.

Well congratulations my friend, I know it was kind of heavy getting to this last paragraph. But the information listed will get you much closer to speaking the language of food labels, and becoming a smarter food shopper.

Change your PH, Change your health

Yes I know, none of us wants to go back to chemistry class, certainly not a crowd's favorite. I promise to keep it simple, but please stay with me and keep reading, there is a couple of really helpful things in these lines.

So down to business, what does PH mean? PH is short for Potential Hydrogen. Which really means, the amount of oxygen present. The normal PH scale is 0-14 with 7 being considered neutral. Pure water is neutral. Things with a PH lower than 7 are considered acidic, and things with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline (or basic). Now here’s the interesting fact. Did you know that disease cannot survive in an alkaline environment? That is right, they live and feed in acidic environments.

Everything we put in our mouth is either acid or alkaline, so we do have control over the PH of our bodies. We are what we eat!!! We should strive to keep ourselves around the 7 mark (7.35 to 7.45 ideally), which is the right PH of the blood. When our PH is lower than 7, or acid, we pick up less oxygen and are more vulnerable to develop diseases.

Poor food choices like processed sugars, carbonated drinks, sport drinks, simple carbs, alcohol, coffee, and too much protein create an acid environment inside our bodies. Besides food, stress is also a condition that can cause our blood to become more acid. We all suffer from it, it seems to be a constant in our lives, but it is bad, very bad for our bodies. So whenever you can, smile real big and take a couple of deep breaths, tell your body you are happy, and guess what, it will believe you!! You will feel the difference.

When our PH is not right, we have poor elimination which creates re-absorption of toxins. This creates a biological paradise for fungi, infection and disease. Disgusting right? Well sadly it doesn’t stop there, these uninvited friends proliferate and continue to create more toxins, meaning, a even more acid environment. And this goes on and grows like a snowball. The higher the toxic load, the more our cells become compromised and the less efficient the body becomes in eliminating toxins and fighting disease.

When our bodies have an acid PH, we have less oxygen in our cells. This causes red cells in our blood die, releasing even more acid, and... yes back to the snowball.

Among the symptoms produced by the lack of oxygen are fatigue, anxiety, lack of energy, insomnia, and strong appetite. Any of these sound familiar? Now the really scary part is, it also creates a better environment for cancer cells to strive, and for infection and inflammatory diseases to develop.

But it’s not all bad news. Certainly, my purpose is not to scare anyone, or to preach about all the bad thing we do to ourselves, but to offer some little tips to alkalize our bodies and revert the balance. Yeah, you speak the lingo now.

Our bodies are always fighting to maintain balance by eliminating toxins. But if the acid levels are too high, the body will not be able to get rid of the excess and must either store it in fat or attack it with calcium from our bones to neutralize it. This acid state of the cells causes inflammation and when the cells are inflamed, the body has a harder time dropping fat and healing.

So I’m hoping by now, we’ve all realized the important roll our body’s PH plays in fighting disease, overcoming illness, and reaching our goal of feeling better and living longer.

Now the good stuff, what can you do to take control over your PH. The best way to alkalize your body is to eat a variety of plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes. Think rainbow, the more colors you get, the better!!! But don’t just drink the juice, because all the sugar is in the juice, making it very acid. Eat the raw produces, benefit from all the enzymes and phytonutrients in them. Vegetables, specially, are very alkaline, they will be able to alkalize your pH, and your health will improve.

And yes, you knew it was coming, drinking water, 8 glasses a day is key to maintaining your PH to a normal level.

Now, to rid off the toxins that are already in our bodies, a great way to clean your kidneys is with parsley. Grab a handful of parsley, wash it and cut it, and let it boil in water for 10 minutes. Drain it and put the water in the fridge. Drink a glass of it everyday for a couple of days. You will notice the difference, and your PH will too.

I hope you enjoyed the information, and you can make use of it.

To your health!!!
